Computational Analysis of Kinyarwanda Morphology: The Morphological Alternations
نویسنده
چکیده
For more than 30 years, there have been renewed interests in computational morphology resulting in numerous morphological tools. However the interest has always been on the politically and economically interesting languages of the world resulting in a wide language divide between the technologically rich and poor languages. Kinyarwanda language, a Bantu language spoken in East Africa is one of those underresourced languages without any language technology tools. The two most essential components of most natural language applications are a morphological analyzer and a machine-readable lexicon. These two components are still lacking for Kinyarwanda and so many other under-resourced languages. The task of developing a morphological analyzer involves two problems: the morphotactics (word formation) and the morphological alternations. In this paper we are mainly concerned with the morphological alternations.

Finite State Solutions For Reduplication In Kinyarwanda Language
Reduplication, the remaining problem in computational morphology is a morphological process that involves copying the base form wholly or partially. Reduplication can also be classified as either bounded or unbounded reduplication. Some solutions have been proposed for bounded reduplication. Some of the proposed solutions use ordered replace rules while others use simultaneous two-level rules. ...
متن کاملFinite-State Morphological Analysis Of Persian
This paper describes a two-level morphological analyzer for Persian using a system based on the Xerox finite state tools. Persian language presents certain challenges to computational analysis: There is a complex verbal conjugation paradigm which includes long-distance morphological dependencies; phonological alternations apply at morpheme boundaries; word and noun phrase boundaries are difficu...
متن کاملMorphonology in the Lexicon
In this paper we present a means of defining morphonological phenomena in an inheritance based lexicon. We make use of the theory behind the formal language MOLUSC, in which morphological alternations were defined as mappings between sequences of tree-structured syllables. We discuss how the alternations can be defined in the inheritance-based lexical representation language DATR, and how the p...

This paper presents a language for the description of morphological alternations which is based on syllable structure. The justification for such an approach is discussed with reference to examples fi'om a variety of languages and the approach is compared to Koskenniemi's two-level account of morphonoIogy. متن کاملTwenty-five years of finite-state morphology
Twenty-five years ago in the early 1980s, morphological analysis of natural language was a challenge to computational linguists. Simple cutand-paste programs could be and were written to analyze strings in particular languages, but there was no general language-independent method available. Furthermore, cut-and-paste programs for analysis were not reversible, they could not be used to generate ...
